Open House Report, SF: A Much-Published House by Nilus de Matran in Ashbury Heights

Cutting-edge when it was finished in 2000, 369 Upper Terrace is a renovated Mid-Century with views to the Pacific Ocean. It still looks great. If you have time for one open house this weekend, this is it.

369 Upper Terrace, Ashbury Heights/Buena Vista, $2.995M
Architect Nilus de Matran does beautiful work— subtle, spare, and full of light— and his projects can be found tucked away all over San Francisco. A student and protege of Zaha Hadid, he renovated this '60s spec house in 2000 for a couple involved in web design, leaving no surface untouched. It's in a row of similar redwood houses, garages right on the street, lacking personality or much welcome, and then he took it a step further, giving it a stucco facade and seriously unwelcoming gates. Inside, it's luminous and private, from them main skylit living space to the rest of the house stepping downhill, all open to the western view. Twelve years later, it still looks fresh. Open Sunday April 28, from 2:00pm to 4:00om.
