Design Destination: The NoMad Hotel Los Angeles

Of all the places that have opened in the last year, The Nomad Hotel Los Angeles should be high on your list of places to visit when it comes to touring spots in Los Angeles with design clout.

Located on the corner of 7th and Olive Streets in downtown, the Sydell Group (they’re also behind The Line Hotel) has reimagined the 1920s bulding as a stunning fin-de-siecle spot.  The first project for French architect and designer Jacques Garcia, who created the breathtaking Hotel Costes in Paris, the hotel takes its inspiration from its history as the headquarters as the Bank of Italy.

It’s existing Neoclassical elements, including its Doric columns and marble floors, have been expertly woven into California contemporary design to create an interior that is modern and elegant, old world and distinctly forward-thinking.

The blue and gold palette of the 241 guest rooms nods to the voluptuous ceiling in the lobby. Its custom interiors were curated Paris/New York-based design studio be-poles and include custom furniture, original artwork, pedestal tubs, embossed leather headboards, and antique Persian rugs in vibrant saturated colors.

Its all day lobby restaurant, headed by Chef Daniel Humm and restauranteur Will Guidara of New York’s Elevent Madison, features New American dishes; the Mezzanine, overlooking the lobby, turns towards formality while the Rooftop is the spot for burgers and light bites. A coffee bar is perfect for a quick cup of joe. For after work cocktails, the lobby, with its hints of gold, its dark wood accents and its comfortable chairs upholstered in richly textured fabrics, is the ideal destination.

But eating, drinking and people-watching are not the only things to do here. The hotel is intent on making this as much a meeting place for locals as it is for out-of-towners with ongoing collaborations and events:

  • To combat the unrelenting heat, check out The NoMad Los Angeles x Kitsuné Artwork pool party. The next one will take place on Thursday, July 12th from 8pm-12am. Guests can enjoy an eclectic mix of electro / house music by DJs Partytime, Them Jeans, and Andre Power; this is the second party in this event series, with additional dates set for August 23rd and September 20th.
  • /THE LAB/, a concept store located just off the lobby, is more than just a whimsically-curated hotel gift shop. The brainchild of French art collectors Emmanuel Renoird and Nicolas Libert who founded downtown’s PLEASE DO NOT ENTER, it includes an exhibition space where they feature new and exclusive contemporary art and design collections each month. Recent highlights include Retour de Japon, which showcased the influence of traditional heritage on contemporary Japanese Craftmanship and Noir, by Los Angeles-based visual artist Charlie Pierrick le Mindu which included performances, small collectibles and wearables.
