Sausalito’s The Inn Above The Tide Offers Panoramic Views and Boutique Luxury

San Francisco certainly has no shortage of jaw-droppingly beautiful boutique hotels. But when the bustle of the city becomes a bit too, well, bustling, it’s nice to know a scenic sanctuary is just a short drive away.

Located just north of the city, Sausalito’s The Inn Above The Tide has the distinct honor of being Northern California’s only luxury hotel where every room is situated right on the water. All that bayside real estate means guests are treated to sweeping views, no matter where they stay, as well as a slew of other impressive ammenities. While the hotel refreshes its guestrooms and suites annually, the property has just completed its most extensive renovation to date, so guests will get a fresh experience whether they’re first-timers or regulars.

As part of the renovation, the hotel added two completely new suites, meeting and event space with full kitchen, dining and living room, and a completely redesigned second-floor suite. All of these new spaces feature private entrances, seaside patios, fireplaces, soaking tubs, and the aforementioned mind-blowing views of the bay and San Francisco skyline. Designer Antonio Martins and art consultant Julie Coyle drew on the sea for inspiration in the renovation, incorporating nods to the history of Sausalito, and a more modern approach to nautical references.

The Founder’s Suite, named to honor the origins of this space as original hotel owner William “Bill” McDevitt’s apartment before he developed the Inn Above Tide, totals 1,000 square feet, with a private, landscaped entry and ADA access. The expansive suite includes one and a half bathrooms, a full kitchen, open dining and living room, private patio, and guestroom with luxurious bathroom. The suite’s grey silk-printed wallpaper, hardwood floors, landscape photography, and classical Cab dining room chairs by Mario Bellini for Casina, all play into the clean and modern aesthetic.

Adjacent to the Founder’s Suite is the new City Lights Suite, which can be booked as a connecting space or a stand-alone reservation. At 720 square feet, the suite features a lounge area, private patio with double lounge chair, surrounding windows to bring in the unprecedented views, built-in king bed with upholstered headboard, indoor/outdoor glass fireplace, and luxurious master bathroom with separate soaking tub and rainwater shower.

Upstairs from these new additions, the property’s 635 square-foot Vista Suite has been wholly reimagined, with a new private entranceway featuring a courtyard, landscaping and sculpture, and surrounding windows and expansive patio curving around the corner suite.
