Designer Crush: Aerin Lauder

1. What is your favorite place in the world?
I love to travel but my home on Long Island has always been my paradise.

2. What's your dream home décor project?
I love the beach and the sea so a dream project for me would be designing a tropical home.

3. In real life, what's your favorite piece in the Aerin Home line?
The Renwick Crystal Chandelier. Its design was inspired by an antique chandelier from an Austrian café that I found in the Hamptons almost 20 years ago.

4. What are the top three décor items everyone should have in their home?
Picture frames for family photos, a great tray to use for serving or as a portable bar, and great lighting.

5. What's your creative process when designing an item in your collection?
My creative process starts with mood boards for seasonal collections. I love pulling out photos and swatches that catch my eye. I am also very influenced by travel, so many times each board references a destination. This spring we were inspired by Capri. For fall, we are inspired by Vienna.

6. Where do you find your favorite interior design items? Any shopping tips?
I’ve found wonderful things shopping the London and Paris flea markets. Antiques have always been a part of my life and I’m drawn to new designs with a historical reference.

7. Ever had an epic DIY disaster? What project would you never dream of taking on yourself again?
Once I painted my son’s room red and it didn’t really work out. I love working closely with amazingly talented designers who also happen to be my friends. Jaques Grange and Daniel Roumaldez have been two of my favorites to work with.

8. What new trends or items are you excited to integrate into your home décor line?
We are excited to complement our bedroom furniture with the introduction of soft bedding later this year. Each expansion we make adds to the overall lifestyle of the brand allowing all components to work together.
