Designer Crush: Beatrice Girelli

1. Who is your biggest role model?

There are many people whose work, personality, creativity, social stands, and ethics I respect and admire, but I don’t have an actual role model. My interests are diverse; therefore I admire people in many different fields. If I were to name a couple strictly related to the world of design and architecture I would say Leonardo da Vinci, Buckminster Fuller, and Zaha Hadid.

2. What was the biggest challenge in reinventing the Palace while preserving its history?

Challenges are typical of every project and unfortunately there is no easy project! The Palace renovation was such an exciting project and we made every effort to stay true to our initial intent to honor the heritage and celebrate the property in a modern key. The transformation was so rewarding that the biggest challenge was probably having to wait for over a year to see the model room design being implemented throughout.

3. Which play or movie would you love to see set in the Palace?

Downton Abbey goes to the West Coast!

4. Are there any new design trends you were excited to integrate into this project?

We had a lot of fun developing bespoke textile patterns for the suites and public areas taking advantage of what digital technology can offer. They look gorgeous!

5. Where did you draw inspiration for this project?

From the property itself, from its incredible history and incredible roster of prominent guests. The city of San Francisco that offers such an enormous wealth of colliding ideas and cultural stimulus also played a big role in our effort to craft a narrative for the renovation.

6. If you hadn't become a designer, which career would you have pursued?

Journalism.

7. What’s the worst pre-designer job you’ve ever had and why?

I am not sure I had any terrible job before design. All my jobs as a student were somehow connected to design.

8. What’s your favorite recipe?

One of my favorites is risotto with prosciutto and melon. Italians don’t really follow recipes from books; I know how to make it and I follow my instinct with quantities and timing. I did find this YouTube video that explains the process, although it's a little different than mine.

9. Create your perfect playlist for us.

Lightning round!

10. Would you rather shop new or vintage?

New for clothing. Vintage for accessories. A mix of both for furnishings and home accents.

11. First celebrity crush?

John Taylor from Duran Duran.

12. What’s your hidden talent?

Jewelry making.

13. Best restaurant in your area? Where is it?

I like Nichol’s in Marina del Rey. Contemporary American diner with a farm to table approach.

14. SF or LA?

Currently it’s a tie. For years I would have said San Francisco (beautiful city, amazing views, public transport, great food, nice people, etc.), but in the last couple of years I have learned to appreciate LA more and I am pretty happy here.
