Designer Crush: Justin Krzyston

1. Who is your biggest role model?

My Uncle Will who lives in Chicago.

2. Which movie or play do you wish you could have designed the set for?

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

3. What is the best way to gauge a client’s personality before starting a project?

I really like to see their closet. A persons closet shows me so much about their personality. Are things color coded, organized by season, or just an utter mess? This is a pretty good gauge on how the project will go.

4. What new design trends are you excited to integrate into your work?

Design trends? Eh I hate that word. Thats like “indoor - outdoor” or “pop of color”.  I am glad to see the big comfortable sectional come back. Lets be cozy and not stuffy. I also cant wait to install more dark steel windows and doors.

5. How do you completely unwind?

Honestly? Legos and red wine. The best way for me to unplug is to open a bottle of pinot noir and a box of legos. It is truly the only way I can shut off the outside world.

6. If you hadn't become a designer, which career would you have pursued?

Thats easy - I would be working on Wall Street

7. What’s the worst pre-designer job you’ve ever had and why?

In high school I was a busboy for a very stinky and messy seafood restaurant.

8. What’s your favorite recipe?

My wife makes the most incredible homemade turkey lasagna of life. It is my favorite dish ever.


  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 (25 oz) jar of spaghetti sauce
  • 1 & 1/4 cups water
  • 1 & 3/4 cups low-fat ricotta cheese
  • 8 oz Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 zucchini (you will slice this into thin rounds)
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 (9 oz) package oven-ready lasagna
  • 1 can sliced black olives


  • Heat oven to 350 degrees
  • Use a large saucepan to brown turkey meat, over medium heat. Drain once done. Add spaghetti sauce and water; simmer 8-10 minutes.
  • Use a medium sized mixing bowl to combine ricotta, one-half mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, eggs, garlic, salt, pepper and red chili pepper flakes. Mix well.
  • Slice zucchini into thin circular pieces
  • Pour 2 cups sauce on bottom of 13×9 inch baking dish. Arrange 3 uncooked pasta pieces lengthwise over sauce, cover with 2 cups sauce. Spread one-half cheese filling over sauce, place a single layer of zucchini slices over cheese layer.
  • Repeat layers of lasagna, sauce, and cheese filling. Top with layer of lasagna and remaining sauce; sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese. Option to place black olives on top of cheese.
  • Cover with foil. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil; bake an additional 10 minutes or until hot & bubbly. Let cool 10 minutes before cutting.
