Designer Crush Q&A: Jennifer Montana

1. Where do you currently live in CA and what’s a special design touch you included to make it feel like home?

Between San Francisco and wine country.  What makes a home a home, to me, are picture frames filled with family and memories.

2. What are some of your favorite charities to support through the Four Rings Montana Family Foundation?

The UCSF Family House, The Children’s Village of Sonoma County, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

3. What’s are your favorite pieces in the JMD collections?

I think overall, I like the impact of the personalized key and the meaning behind why it was bought, whether for oneself or as a gift.  Many of our customers choose words they feel represent meaning or serve as a mindful reminder of what is needed. From a fashion perspective, I love our Marina necklace. It’s a 44” dual chain that really is a versatile piece.

4. What are the top three jewelry stapes every woman should have?

Earrings, a wedding band, and of course a JMD piece.

5. What's your creative process when designing an item in your collection?

It’s funny because it happens most of the time in the middle of the night, but mostly it comes from understanding who I am designing for and to visualize it on them.

6. Where do you find your favorite jewelry pieces? Any shopping tips?

Oh I leave it to Joe. I’m lucky...he has the best taste.

7. Ever had an epic DIY disaster? What project would you never dream of taking on yourself again?

In my mind there isn’t a DIY disaster. Often things don’t turn out as planed or projects how we envision, but that what makes them special and unique. I enjoy a good challenge.

8. What new jewelry trends or pieces are you excited to integrate into your collections?

We are currently working on a few new designs for our retail line, but I am very excited about the charitable foundation partnerships we have done over the past year. This work is very gratifying.

9. Where do you gain inspiration from for your design process?

From my partners, from viewing art, and also from nature.

10. Lightning round!

Beach or mountains?

Twitter or Facebook?

Neither really – I love privacy. But I have been known to post pictures on Instagram to a few very good friends and family members. I think I have 12 –15 followers.

Should you spend money on understated earrings or a statement necklace?

Necklace of course. It’s more visible considering most women’s hair covers their ears.

Would you rather shop new or vintage?

Jewelry – vintage, clothes – new.

Great view or perfect pool?

Great view!!!

SF or LA?

San Francisco – not even close!

What's one tip you wish someone had told you when first starting out in the design world?

Never think for a minute that you can’t do this.
