Designer Crush Q&A: Kristi Will

1. Where do you currently live in CA and what's special about how you've designed your personal space?

I currently live in Half Moon Bay. The most special transformation in our home has been the reinvention of our living room into a music room. For the first eight years we lived in our house – no one ever went into our living room. The transformation has been a result of our families interest in music. Our two daughters (10 and 12) and my husband both play multiple instruments and piano. This has now become one of our favorite rooms to relax and spend time in.

2. What's your dream design project? Who would it be for (dead or alive)?

My dream project would be designing a home with Shelton Mindel Architects. I am obsessed with their work and always find inspiration in the spaces they create.

3. In real life, what's your favorite design project you've completed to date?

We just finished a complete renovation of a vacation home at the Four Seasons Resort, Hualalai, Kona. It captures all of my favorite design elements in a project.

4. You've been gifted a fabulously furnished dream home but can only bring one item from your current space. What would it be?

We have a 36” diameter wood carving from the 16th century of my husbands family crest. We carried it back home from Germany a few years ago. It currently hangs above our fireplace and is our family treasure.

5. What's your creative process when designing a space?

My approach to design always starts with the architecture of the space. I am a firm believer that with every project there are two clients, the homeowner and the home. You have to understand both to ensure a successful project.

6. Where do you score prized interior design items? Any shopping tips?

We love designing furnishings for our clients. Most of the furnishings for our projects are custom made and our success is based on the talents of the wonderful artists we work with. My current favorite marketplace is online at 1stDibbs. I can find inspiration for custom pieces along with local buys….all just a click away!

7. Ever had an epic DIY disaster? What project would you never take on again yourself?

When I first started in the business, I remember an installation where the arms of the dining chairs did not fit under the dining table apron. It was a total disaster but a great learning experience.

8. What new design trend are you excited to integrate into your next project?

I am really enjoying the comeback of brass and gold. We recently used a 24-carat sink and lav set from THG in our Powder Room at the SF Showcase. It was stunning with lots of added sparkle.
