Designer Crush: Tim Campbell

1. Who is your biggest role model?
Richard Branson. I think he is one of the best business leaders of our time and my values align with his. He is smart, innovative, fearless, and a rebel at heart. All things I aspire to be.

2. Which movie or play do you wish you could have designed the set for?
Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Having lived in Texas as a boy, I’ve always had a fascination with the dusty, forgotten wind-dried desert towns that are places between other places.  That movie so captures Texas for me.

3. What is the best way to gauge a client’s personality before starting a project?
I like to spend time just in conversation with a client before we take a job. Casual conversation is a way to gauge not only their personality but more importantly, their values. Shared values makes for workable relationships more than personality does, so I look for those first.

4. What new design trends are you excited to integrate into your work?
I mostly don’t follow trends because they are generally of the moment and all about group-think, so I try to look at what is not being done and do that. I think reality TV does trends really well, but in order to have a lasting impact, work needs to have staying power that is rooted in a personal design philosophy.

5. How do you completely unwind?
If I’m home, then nothing is better than watching Cops reruns on a Saturday in bed with my two pit bulls or taking a few jiu-jitsu classes back to back. For travel, I love Africa and going on safari. It always comes back to time with animals for me.

6. If you hadn't become a designer, which career would you have pursued?
I think a pilot. I love to fly and studied for my pilot’s license years back.

7. What’s the worst pre-designer job you’ve ever had and why?
I worked in a burger joint in Texas in high school. It was the worst job ever because it was one of those assembly line burger places. The food quality was terrible, the customers worse. And standing over a greasy grill in the summertime for a few bucks convinced me that I needed a better life.
8. What’s your favorite recipe?

My husband makes an amazing Chicken Marbella that I love. It’s just a perfect weekday dish.

9. Create your perfect playlist for us.

Lightning round!

10. Would you rather shop new or vintage?

11. First celebrity crush?

Peggy Lee.

12. What’s your hidden talent?

I’m a pretty good boxer.

13. Best restaurant in your area? Where is it?

Al’Aqua in Atwater Village

SF or LA?
