A Taste of Oaxaca in West Hollywood

Vegan Mexican restaurant Gracias Madre opened its doors in West Hollywood earlier this year and it's been a tough table to get ever since, especially since the décor is as admirable as the cuisine. Designed by Wendy Haworth (who also designed Café Gratitude in Venice Beach), the restaurant’s architecture and design includes high barrel vaulted ceilings with wood trusses, brick walls, custom hand woven chairs and stools, and custom steel doors and windows. Potentially the best design feature is the graphic cement tiles designed by artists in Oaxaca, Mexico. The outdoor area is grounded with brick herringbone from Mexico and a pair of large olive trees.

All of the furniture is custom and most is made from reclaimed wood. The designer wanted the space to have a Mexican craft and design feel. Wendy also designed all the iron lighting. Since iron work is a tradition in Mexico, she wanted to incorporate it into the design.
