It’s hard to conceive of how a 27-acre estate flanked by a vineyard and boasting drop-dead-gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside could undergo any kind of aesthetic improvement.

Luckily for her clients, Ive Haugeland, principal of Shades of Green Landscape Architecture, has an active imagination. When she first visited the Napa Valley site, she saw not only its existing beauty but also a vision of what it could be.

“It already had so many beautiful features; we just worked to highlight and enhance them,” says Haugeland. Taking advantage of the sunny hilltop location and the existing oak trees and natural grasses, Haugeland designed three separate spaces where her clients could retreat—a pool, a spa and a boccie court.

The pool was positioned to maximize the warmest afternoon rays, and a privacy wall was painted purple to create a dramatic counterpoint to the lush meadows.
