Between the time the young couple purchased the 1300 square foot home and now, they’d added two children to the mix. Luckily, the home had been renovated to nearly twice its original size to accommodate them, thanks to architect Karin Payson and interior designer Lisa Staprans. The staircase at the home’s center, lit by a skylight above, serves as a focal point.
Committed to raising their children in the city, they hoped to create a welcoming outdoor space for them to play in. They wanted a space that was conducive to entertaining. Also on the list: a study/office and a master bedroom retreat.
To create space for everything they wanted, Payson configured the house as a piano nobile. The lower street level floor comprises a small mudroom and the garage while the main rooms are located on the floor above the street. She was able to create a a deck off the master bedroom that overlooks the garden below. The bedding is from Coyuchi.
Payson also extended the home backward, towards the hill, which connected the main floor, which includes the kitchen and den, with the garden which showcases a living wall and a pizza oven. The result is a home where, the clients say, “not an inch is wasted. We use it all.”
