Design for the Soul(Cycle)

This holiday, Northern Californians can tuck into a turkey dinner with the accompanying mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie knowing that tomorrow they can burn it all off in one of the three recently opened SoulCycle studios in Larkspur, San Francisco, or Palo Alto. SoulCycle—a spinning class on steroids complete with push-ups, crunches, and weightlifting on the bike—is taking the region by storm. The success lies in part to the heart-pumping workouts set to popular music and attentive customer service, but riders can’t ignore the transformative power of the design. The crisp lines, fresh colors, and inspirational touches will leave sweaty riders feeling clean.

    Design at the Door

Full disclosure: I'm a SoulCycle convert. I started taking classes in Larkspur when the studio opened this summer (the San Francisco outpost opened on November 16 and pedals started churning in the Palo Alto branch on November 22). I had heard about the workout from San Francisco interior designer Grant Gibson, who wrote about his experience with the chain on his blog. I was immediately seduced by the design of the studio, which is composed of a color and material palette that would make an architect swoon: stark white walls, gray and yellow modern graphics, and a dark tile floor. I even started designing a bathroom using the SoulCycle locker room as inspiration. Pictured is the San Francisco SoulCycle on Union Street.
