Surf Chic

When interior designer Melissa Palazzo of Pal+Smith was asked to work on this Orange County home, she channeled the owners’ profession and interests for inspiration. Luckily, this house belongs one of the world’s most celebrated manufacturers of surf and skateboard apparel, so there was no shortage of creativity in the household.

    1980s Update

"The clients are very stylish," says Palazzo of Costa Mesa-based Pal+Smith. "But the house was built in the 1980s and needed an update." In the living room, the designer started with the Azore rug from her own line. "I love to put a big pattern in a room," she says. The art over the fireplace is from the client's collection. "These people have access to an incredible array of surf and skate art," she says. "They have many of the field's best designers working for them." On the opposite side of the room the designer grouped another kind of collection from her client: vintage skateboards from the 1970s.
