Open House Obsession: Behold, The Perfect Eichler in San Rafael, $1.15M

Where: 28 Arcangel Way, San Rafael
When: Sunday, March 20th and 27th, from 1:00pm-4:00pm
Asking: $1,150,000
What: A 3-bed, 2-bath classic, built in 1960 by developer Joseph Eichler and designed by the architectural firm of Jones & Emmons. Lovingly cared of by a previous owner, this house had the advantage of being the developer’s model with numerous upgrades, plus an original landscape plan by Mid-Century landscape architect Robert Royston.

Intent on bringing Modernism to the middle class after WW!!, Eichler built thousands of similar homes up and down California. Five decades later, these houses are sought after by lovers of Modern design– especially one in such flawless condition.

What We love: In a neighborhood where other homes have been recently “upgraded” with Tuscan Style kitchens or their sliding glass panels replaced with French doors, this one gets the prize for original integrity.

Like so many Jones & Emmons' designs for Eichler subdivisions, the main entry is through an atrium than opens directly to the living areas.

Restored, Not Renovated: Because it was in such good shape, the current owners didn’t have to re-invent the house, but did cover the serious basics– like a new roof, replacing the old asbestos floors and upgrading the radiant heat. The kitchen cabinets and appliances (besides the refrigerator) are original; the George Nelson light fixtures are not original but will stay with the house.

The immaculate, original mahogany panelling still glows throughout, especially the otherwise-austere master bedroom.

Who: The sellers are a children’s clothing designer and a senior executive at Design Within Reach. They combined two of the small original bedrooms into one large shared home office, below.

More: Go to Marin Modern’s outstanding dedicated site for more images and specific details about the owner's stewardship. For everything Eichler (seriously, everything) there's the Eichler Network. Below, the main living spaces and master bedroom open up under the sweeping roof to a back yard with room for a pool.
