5 Fresh Spots for the Design Lover in Oakland’s Temescal Neighborhood
There’s no doubt about it, Oakland is on the up and up. Long considered San Francisco’s kid sister, this city is quickly coming into its own. And, it’s also got an esthetic all its own.
New multi-starred restaurants, boutiques, and designer shops are popping up quicker than one can count – and Temescal seems to be ground zero for this momentum. We’ve selected five different design-worthy spots that are worth the trip across the Bay.
Esqueleto is a beautifully curated art gallery and jewelry store that was started up by Bay Area jewelry designer Lauren Wolf. Not only is the gold, turquoise, and raw diamond jewelry that’s sold in the shop worship worthy, but the space is also gorgeous. Formerly a horse stable, the store’s wrap-around windows flood it with light highlighting the paintings on the wall and the various wooden sculptures for sale. Esqueleto is located at 482A 49th Street.
Homeroom is not only a place to get delicious mac-and-cheese—think aged Asiago, fresh herbs, peas and lemon zest—it’s also in a wonderful place to hangout. This spacious, yet still homey, restaurant was started up by co-owners Allison Arevalo and Erin Wade. It’s lined with sweet wooden tables, modern bubble glass chandeliers, and a giant chalkboard showing a map of California’s treats. Homeroom is located at 400 40th Street.
Manifesto bike shop is more than just a place to buy a bicycle. It’s a bike boutique, a community center, and an art gallery. Husband and wife co-owners Mackay Gibbs and Sam Cunningham have carefully curated their locale with high-quality (yet still affordable) bike goods, like Brooks leather saddles, elegantly designed Flying Pigeon bicycles, and artisan bike-themed paintings. Manifesto is located at 421 40th Street.
Temescal Alley Barber Shop is the place for men to get a haircut, beard trim, or shave in Oakland. Owners Brad Roberts and Nicholas Vlahos are a highly esthetically oriented duo and have put time and care into their classic old-timey shop. It comes complete with a spinning barber pole, white tiled floors, skylights, and beautifully wood-framed mirrors and portraits. Temescal Alley Barber Shop is located at 470-B 49th Street.
5. Lot 49
Lot 49 is dangerous. It’s impossible to walk out of this store empty handed because it’s chock full of gorgeous wares. Owner Perry Lucina has an eye for covetable house items, from Danish modern furniture to vintage cameras to designer plates, mugs, and glasses. Lot 49 is located at 470 49th Street.
