1. When did you first become interested in design and what was the journey to eventually building your own firm? I’ve always been interested in design but it took many years to end up on this path.

1. You and your brother Casey were raised in a family of artists. How did your dad (a high-end custom home builder) in particular influence your professional passion?As a kid, I loved going to his job sites.

1. How did you both meet and what inspired the decision to launch Stewart-Schafer?James and I met at a mutual friend’s barbeque in New York and we began dating shortly after.

1. How did you get your start in the industry and how did your career evolve by the time Kitchell Custom Homes came into your life?Growing up in Hawaii, I was exposed to the design and build industry through friends and family.  I enjoyed drawing and working with my hands.

1. Walk us through the process of turning your blog on first-time home ownership into a successful design and build firm — how did that happen?My husband and I were creative and completely hands on with our first home. I would do a bunch of DIY projects and “Ikea Hacks” and blog all about them.

 1. What inspired your love of design and how did you get your start in the business?My love of design has honestly always been within and happened to present itself after high school when I went to design school to further my inspiration for interiors.

1. How did you get your start in design? Just like anyone who's naturally interested in design and spaces, it started when I was young. I would just think of how I could make the spaces surrounding me better. Growing up I had an inclination towards art, but I also liked problem solving.
