I Could Live Here: Oh Happy Day’s 500-Square-Foot Apartment in the MissionAuthor:Erin Feher
Yep, I have my pick of all of the available real estate out there and this week I decide to downsize seven square feet. But when I saw Jordan Ferney’s absolutely adorable little San Francisco apartment, first on A Cup of Joe, and then the jaw-dropping before-and-afters on her own blog, Oh Happy Day!, I realized nothing gets me going like some creative space planning and smart style. This place isn’t even for sale—it’s a rental near the Valencia corridor (and it doesn’t look like she’s going anywhere any time soon), but when I saw what she did with the space I just had to share…and wish, just a little bit, that I lived there.
See the kicker is Jordan and her husband Paul have two little boys. This is especially inspiring to me as Danny and I shift our own tiny (507-square-foot) space around to make room for the new itsy-bitsy roommate we are expecting in August.
Jordan can tell the story best (and it is a great story, so I recommend you check out both posts and all the pictures here and here) but I will go through just a few of my favorite elements and maybe a few reasons why I kinda wish she was my best friend.
Color. We are wrapping up the color issue over here, and this place exemplifies a major color commandment: A simple backdrop makes the best canvas for bold colors. Jordan painted the entire place white, and stained the wood floors a darker brown. Then she didn’t hold back on pattern and color. The result is a small space that isn’t too overwhelming but still explodes with personality.
Storage. It’s smart and it looks great, from the open shelving in the boys room to the Elfa closet system to the low-riding bookshelves.
Them. Um, how cute are they?
