Design Dish: All Day Delicious At Hayden Cafe At Platform



Described as an “all-day neighborhood canteen for the creative community of the Hayden Tract”, Hayden, a new casual restaurant, located at Culver City’s Platform, matches the artistic flair of the hungry crowd it serves with its own inventiveness. 

Helmed by Ari Koelender, who honed his skills at such spots as Providence and Red Medicine, the James Beard Rising Star chef, who was recognized for his work at Leon’s Fine Poultry & Oyster Shop in Charleston, highlights local California ingredients filtered through European technique.


Start the day with coffee and banana bread, baked and served in an individual cast iron. Koelender’s signature crispy buckwheat waffles, served with an array of intriguing toppings, are also on offering or try a Japanese breakfast bowl for a savory treat. Later in the day, the menu adds oysters, crudos, ceviche, charcuteries platters, sandwiches, salads and tartines. Creative thinking underlines even the simplest dishes; here, for example, yuzu and dill take avocado toast to new heights. To pair with your meal: an extensive collection of wines, handpicked by partner and sommelier Anthony Calian, which can also be purchased at the adjoining wine shop. 


The restaurant’s design reflects its ethos and imaginative spirit. Working with Studio Jesse James, the space incorporates lighting and furniture from neighbor, British designer Tom Dixon. Custom woodwork, handmade ceramic flatware, and an Italian marble bar reflect its dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
