Natural Retreat
Author:Lindsey ShookLos Angeles-based interior design firm Alexander Design Build is known for crafting livable, luxurious environments. But when it came to designing her own home, founder and principal designer Vanessa Alexander rolled up her sleeves and lived on the property for three years while overhauling the existing farmhouse in order to see how the light interacted with the land. “We wanted to make the most of the exceptional natural light,” says Alexander.
Nestled in the contour of a hill in Malibu, the designer completely changed the floor plan in order to create more fluidity and spaciousness. In the master bedroom, walls were removed, creating a loft-inspired design providing direct access to the spa- like master bathroom. “We loved the idea of having an open space between the bedroom and bathroom that allowed us to maintain surrounding views of the outside,” says Alexander. Massive doors and windows were installed to maximize the light and airiness.
A mixed palette of neutral tones, worn leather and heavy linens were used throughout the bathroom to complement the surrounding environment. Alexander designed a custom vanity and a set of suspended mirrors (positioned in front of floor-to-ceiling windows) that are both functional and fashionable while not blocking the view. The result is an indoor bathroom that transports you to the outdoors.
