Real Estate Report: House in the Hollywood Dells Makes Us Think of David HockneyAuthor:Philip Ferrato
The British have long had a fascination with Los Angeles— Evelyn Waugh, Christopher Isherwood, David Hockney. We can see Hockney here.
The Basics: A 3-bed, 3-bath house in the “Hollywood Dells’ neighborhood of Los Angeles, maybe better known as Hollywood Hills East. There’s a 2-car garage and the obligatory pool, on a steep street-to-street lot which is covered in LA forest— one with palm trees— plus there’s no lawn to deal with. Listed in mid-May, 2011, it’s down from the original asking of $1.25M. The owners paid $1.25M in 2006.
Not Bo Basic: Built in 1960 and renovated any number of times, it’s got a clean, classic Hollywood vibe. In other words, perfect for ex-pat British painters. It’s probably the very private pool and the palm trees. We’re also loving the thin black iron railing along the balcony. The seating area to the right is over the garage, and the main entry is actually up two flights of stairs from the street.
The living room overlooking the pool, below. The original cast stone stairs continue up to two bedrooms and two baths.
At the other end, the dining room and kitchen. Once upon a time, there was probably a railing around the the dining area. We’d worry about our often-inebriated friends:
There’s a patio just off the kitchen, and we suspect the steps go up to Alcyona Drive, which runs above the top of the property:
And in case you’ve forgotten what one of David Hockney’s Los Angeles paintings looks like:
Portrait of Nick Wilder, 1966 (Private Collection)
Downstairs, back at pool level, there’s a flexible space for an office/media rooom/ guest room with a bath and polished cement floors.
Listing: 6309 Ivarene Avenue, Los Angeles [Redfin]
