Open House Obsession: This Brentwood Post & Beam by Ray Kappe is Worth a Visit

Where: 936 Kenter Way, Brentwood
When: Sunday, April 7 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm
What: A modest but classic Post & Beam house by Ray Kappe– an interesting architect in his own right, but as founder of SCI-Arc, one of the most influential teachers of his time.

The 4-bed, 3-bath house, built in 1960, came on the market this week asking $2.499M, an asking price that seems a high for a house that needs some restoration, although perfectly liveable as is. Plus the setting is lovely– a private treehouse looking out into the canyon.

At some point in its past the owners have sought to lighten up the interiors– a mistake for an architect who created a Piranesian sense of light, dark and complex shadows– bleaching the redwood interiors and covring the ceilings in drywall. Still, the bones are there, and it could have been worse. They could have painted it white and put in marble floors. Mpre images at the listing, and totally worth a visit this weekend.
