Open House Obsession: Mid-Century Modern and Mindful of Aging in Place $1.425MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 8226 Skyline Drive, Los Angeles
When: Sunday, June 23 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm
What: Built in 1954, this 2-bed, 2-bath Post & Beam was expertly remodeled by Bertram Architects in 2008 for a newly-retired couple returning to LA. The house– where they’d reared their family years before– got a complete overhaul to meet their new needs, mindful of “aging in place” with an elevator and grab-bars in the baths. The few interior doors have lever door sets instead of knobs. In this perfect small house, there’s room for some well-chosen furniture and an the owners’ exceptional collection of vintage French film posters:
Just inside the front door, a book-lined office nook. Entry is on the top floor, the bedrooms are downstairs.
The kitchen has high-end appliances and a view from the sink:
Walled off from the street, the front of the house has a large patio, lushly planted with bamboo and eucalyptus:
Upside: Although not marketed as a “retirement home,” you could buy this place in your fifties and not have to leave until carried out– feet first. It’s a great place to live even if you’re not planning that far in advance.
More: Sotheby’s agent Brian Ades has put together an exemplary dedicated website with more images, and we’re big fans of Bertram Architects.
