Open House Obsession: Mill Valley Hillside House, Plus Parking With Views $2.445MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 404 Rose Avenue, Mill Valley
When: Sunday, August 17 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm
What: It’s a familiar sight in Marin County– narrow roads lined with garages and carports with the houses resting, sometimes stacked, below. The result of both geography and California’s ingrained car culture, many of them are mossy, mysterious portals to very private properties. Designed by Thompson Studio Architects in 2001 and recently renovated by them, this 4-bed, 3.5-bath house’s public face is a crisp parking pavilion with a sweeping roof and views, and the house below is indeed very private, looking east across Mill Valley. There’s access directly from the carport (top) and a private rooftop deck, but the main entrance is down one flight of stairs, via a sheltered deck that’s also accessible from the well-equipped kitchen:
Illuminated by a long skylight and with polished concrete floors, the living spaces open to a deck and views of the canyon and Mill Valley:
The double-height master suite is a composition of planes and contrasts, opening to a private deck, plus there’s another very private deck off the austerely luxe master bath:
What We Love: In addition to the polished concrete floors throughout the interior, we’re fans of the impeccable split cedar shingles and the hot tub:
