In Santa Barbara, a Modernist XanaduAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 3660 Toro Canyon Park Road, Santa Barbara
Architect: Barbara Bestor
What: In a setting of 160 acres, the long road leading to this Modernist Xanadu only gives tantalizing, controlled glimpses of what’s at the end– a unfolding composition of structures and courtyards tucked into the slope of a hill, overlooking Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean.
Built for film producer John Lesher and his wife Christina Liao over the course of four years, the 4-bed, 4-bath structure is the epitome of the indoor/outdoor living that’s possible in California. The architect’s favorite space in the house is the living/dining room, set between a courtyard and a terrace where the walls of glass disappear. “It’s like an earthy Parthenon; very majestic but also very rustic and laid back.”
