Barclay Butera Takes TerraneaAuthor:Candace Abbott
Barclay Butera has proven that sometimes hidden treasure is right in your own backyard with the unveiling of his latest design project with Terranea Real Estate in Palos Verdes. The Showcase Ocean Golf Villa sits a stone’s throw from the breezy California coast, right at the 6th hole of the resort’s award-winning nine-hole par-three golf course with breathtaking views of Catalina Island.
If you’ve visited Terranea, then you know the natural beauty which lies along the coastal stretch. Barclay, in what seems effortlessly, brought the beauty indoors, drawing inspiration from the oceanside bluffs, the magnificence of nature that surrounds the resort and the overall essence of Palos Verdes seaside living. He transformed a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, 2,800 square foot villa into a sanctuary.
Fully designed in classic Barclay Butera style, the listing price is $2.895 million, with $10 million views. But the sumptuous vistas are not all that makes this property worth wanting. Barclay’s designs take you through a wave of luxury.
Upon entry you land in the midst of a sweet Spanish Colonial-style courtyard with an outdoor living space built around a massive fireplace that is framed with greenery. Travel a few feet forward and you’ll land at the front door, which opens to a living and dining space that bear the Butera stamp aptly outfitted in mix of coastal hues, soft blues, warm whites and decadent greys, which play off of dark wooden furnishings and exposed beams. The living space archways bring charm while the kitchen space features state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances and another set of French doors leading to the backyard and those views.
The art and the accents throughout the home all nod to the breathtaking location. From unassuming white sea coral pieces, abalone and metallic sea shells to abstract wall art that speaks to the colors of the sea, Barclay has carried out his design concept in every way, leaving no corner untouched.
Never one to sacrifice luxe, Barclay employs metallics and modern elements that dazzle, such as a gold-toned starburst mirror in one of the guestrooms, along with Regency inspired wardrobe, complete with gold circular handles. The other guestroom is decked out in lush white bedding and accented in navy with a pop of coral and a lot of oceanic detail.
The master is where dreams are made. Here he maintains design integrity, but lightens things up a bit with a soft sea-foam palette for the bedding and luscious lounge chairs within the space. Just off the master is a bathroom with a bathtub that begs for bubbles and candles, featuring French doors that open to the side of the house, but lead to that stunning view.
Lastly he designed the adjacent suite that lies off the courtyard, up the terra cotta tiles to a retreat that lends itself to views of the Palos Verdes hills. Designed in a more muted palette of slate blues and grey and cream, this space features a decadent bathroom with a soaking tub and it’s own private courtyard.
All in all, this partnership between Barclay Butera and Terranea Resort has raised the bar in seaside living, where dramatic ocean views and design elegance feel almost necessary. In attempting to create an in-home retreat of sorts, Barclay has done just that. He’s blended rich with requiescence and made it clear that the coastal real estate treasure hunt is over.
