Open House Obsession: Marmol Radziner For The Intelligent Minimalist, $3.45MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 848 Millwood Avenue, Venice
When: Sunday, April 19 from 2:00pm-5:00pm
What: Designed, built, and landscaped by Marmol Radziner, this 3-bed, 3.5-bath, 3,200-square-foot house is new construction on a classic Venice through-street lot.
A firm that consistently expands the architect’s role, Marmol Radziner has a practice that stretches from classic Modernist renovations like Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House in Palm Springs to prefab and retail to luxury dwellings and jewelry. With every detail thought through and attended to, this Venice design/build project has all the hallmarks of the firm’s work– austere, unadorned but warm and always beautifully crafted.
Taking full advantage of the long narrow lot, the main space is a great room with 10-foot ceilings and stained concrete floors plus a wall of sliding windows open to the west. The driveway, garage, and mechanicals are located just beyond the kitchen with access to Millwood Lane.
Details of the stairway and powder room. Wood finishes throughout are walnut.
At the top of the stairs, the family room/lounge is a retreat from the main space and leads to the bedrooms—all which have huge window walls looking out over the “old” Venice. Below, the master bedroom and bath.
