Open House Obsession: Delicious ’59 Fickett In The Hollywood Hills, $2.5M

Where: 15171 Mulholland Drive, Hollywood Hills
When: Sunday, May 3 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Asking: $2.495M
What: On a private lane, this 4-bed, 3-bath ranch under a classic wingspread roof was designed by architect Edward H. Fickett and built in 1959.

Fickett’s mastery of layered materials and scale is evident in the wide board-and-batten siding and entry atrium. The back of the house faces north,  open to a view of the valley.

Although Fickett’s luxurious custom houses are much sought after today, he was publicly under-appreciated in his lifetime. But that’s not to say he wasn’t influential, Fickett and his office provided the designs that enabled Eichler and other developers to build some 60K homes in Southern California after WWII. Odds are good your grandparents lived in a Fickett-designed tract house; this example fits neatly between his classic tract houses and the sprawling compounds he designed for film stars.

There’s a new kitchen and master bath (below) but otherwise the house retains both the spirit of its time and many original details.
