Mar Vista Hideaway With A Modernist Heart, $1.159MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 3788 Boise Avenue, Mar Vista
What: A classic 2-bed, 1.5-bath stucco bungalow built in 1930, remodeled by Los Angeles architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough as their own home and design lab, and surrounded by hedges and not visible from the street, a retreat from the outside world.
The original Mediterannean bungalow interior has been buffed, polished, and layered with the architects’ signature horizontal planking.
Below, the master bedroom connects to the garden, and the master bath is a subtle composition of disparate finishes, plain white tile, highly-figured marble, and recycled wood.
Throughout the house, the original steel windows have been restored, while the powder room, riffing on James Turrell perhaps, opens up to the sky.
