A Splendid Tudor on The Presidio, and a Glimpse at a Lost San Francisco, $14MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 3383 Pacific Avenue, Presidio Heights
What: A 7-bed, 6-bath, 2-half bath, Tudor Style house built in 1928 looking directly into the legendary Presidio. Occupied by the same family since the 1960s, the house has been refreshed and staged for sale, but there remain glimpses of life fifty years ago. The main spaces are beautifully proportioned and grand, with untouched wood paneling, door surrounds, and a graceful staircase. Plus a kitchen and pantry intended for servants.
All that rich, dark wood opens up to a barrel-vaulted breakfast room and a greenhouse-sheltered patio. There’s a small but lush garden as well.
The previous owners never renovated the butler’s pantry and kitchen– perfect for formal entertaining, if that’s your thing. The kitchen also connects to the garage and service spaces below.
On the ground floor there’s an immense garage, servants’ quarters and various storage spaces like the wine cellar, wallpapered with decades of wine lables. There’s also a tack room for your saddles and riding gear.
Long one of San Francisco’s quietest and grandest neighborhoods, Presidio Heights is at the edge of that was once the northernmost Spanish military post of Nueva España, dating to 1776, and now a National Park, with a lot of history in between. While we don’t know the architect’s name, this is very much the kind of eclectic luxury home that characterizes the neighborhood. In this case, a kind of Plutocratic Elizabethan, located on a street to very fine homes by such skilled practitioners as Julia Morgan, William Wurster and Willis Polk.
Presidio Heights is also a neighborhood tht smells good– a whiff of cypress, eucalyptus and the occasional ocean breeze. Below, the top floor is occupied by ensuite bedrooms, plus a master suite with its own beautifully paneled library overlooking the Presidio.
