Open House Obsession: Exuberant Spanish Hideaway in Los Feliz, $4.2MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 2545 North Vermont Avenue, Los Feliz
When: Sunday January 29 from 1:00pm-4:00pm
What: A splendid 5-bed, 6-bath, Spanish Style stucco classic (built in 1928) with unexpected interior spaces and inflected with a seductive Franco-Moroccan vibe. Walled, gated and hedged, it’s both a welcoming and serenely private place.
Owners Mark Werts Amanda Shi-Werts, veteran retailers and owners of American Rag Compagnie and Maison Midi are no strangers to high-style eclecticism. Their online and stand-alone shops are full of atmospheric furniture and accessories, with origins spanning from Southwestern France to Morocco, and their home– fresh to the market this week– is no exception.
The vaulted entry hall, below. There’s an intimate alcove above filled with a selection of the Shi-Werts outstanding collection of Orientaliste paintings and objects, the 19th Century French art movement depicting North Africa and the Near East. The almost-Baroque/almost Art Deco arches and vaults appear throughout the house; the owners have made an effort to preserve some of the original finishes and ceiling medallions.
A shrinelike alcove off the vast living room sets antique inlaid marquetry against a pair of lipstick-red Barcelona chairs.
Below, a family-friendly kitchen and dining area near the pool. Bonus points for the multicolored French cafe furniture.
Below, a charming guest bedroom and its ensuite Moroccan tile bath.
What We Love: The witty, light-handed attention to detail, proving that luxury does not necessarily mean acres of marble. Below, the master bath and its sexy “wet room”– a vaulted, tiled retreat with shower and soaking tub.
