Breaking New Ground in Los Altos HillsAuthor:Lindsey Shook
Since establishing Urban Pacific in 2005, managing member Tom Wilson and his team have conceived and constructed more than 40 homes in the tech-centric Bay Area hub of Silicon Valley. Known for their impressive ability to scout and transform underutilized locations, nearly all of their projects involve a full demolition of existing properties to make way for a brand-new estate. Though some customization occurs, these spaces, done on spec, are designed to meet the immediate needs of modern buyers in a comprehensive way while offering comfort and accessibility. “We really are creating a turnkey environment for our clients,” says Wilson “They walk in and it’s done. It’s ready to live in.”
Most recently Wilson and the Urban Pacific team worked with architect Gary Kohlsaat to nestle a cutting-edge dwelling into a steeply sloping ridge on a one-acre property known as the Hilltop Residence in Los Altos. “It was a challenging lot, but I saw potential there and knew we could make something spectacular,” says Wilson on the recently unveiled residence. It’s maximally minimal, and comes complete with (deep breath): game area, gym, theater, wine room, a negative-edge spa that flows into a negative-edge pool, outdoor cabana and more. “The bottom floor is buried into the hillside—essentially a walk-out basement—but the whole front side is glass. You don’t feel like you’re underground,” says Wilson.
Playing a key role in Hilltop’s development, Urban Pacific enlisted Smart Space Interior Design to select the materials and finishes and set the overall direction of the aesthetic. They began their creative exploration by profiling the type of buyer that might find the property desirable, and kept them top of mind until the end. “The Smart Space team presented Urban Pacific with all of the selections: from cabinet choices, tile designs, countertops, floor layouts, lighting choices, and wall treatments, down to the cabinet hardware.” Says Smart Space founder Natasha Muller, “I feel all of it came together beautifully, and the successful result was due to the wonderful synergy that emerged from our teams working together!”
Urban Pacific’s innovative approach to development led them to seek counsel from our California Home+Design team on what products represent the latest and greatest in both form and function. From tiles and surfaces to appliances and more, the team selected brands that are leading their industries into the future of domestic design.

We asked Tom from Urban Pacific to share insights on collaborating with our partners…
“All Natural Stone is our go-to source for all tile and quartz. Whether to inspire our inter- nal creative brainstorms or to present clients with fully developed designs, it is the resource we use for our tile and granite selection. They have an abundance to choose from and the best personalized customer service.”
“Artistic Tile’s products have a reputation for being both artistic and elegant. We utilized their lines for inspiration throughout the house. Each element was chosen with the intention to leave a lasting impression, and Artistic Tile always helps us deliver the ‘wow’ factor.”
“Atherton Appliance & Kitchens offers more than just an ample range of product selections; their customer service, professional candor, and follow-through set a high standard for the industry. They are consistently prompt and responsible and help us make the projects flow.”

“DXV was presented as an option and we were thrilled to be showcasing their products as we were getting in a routine of picking the same plumbing brands. Their designs are thoughtful and well executed, representing classic features and timeless style. They will be a staple choice for our future projects.”
“We have a long-running client history with Ferguson. They provide an expansive vendor list and a large variety of products in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and beyond. For this project in particular, we turned to them for all of our high-end lighting. They helped us select and expedite the products and we rely on our relationship with Ferguson to supply our projects, from beginning to end and every- thing in between.”
“Porcelanosa has a signature look that is clean, fresh, and contemporary. Their style is exactly what we wanted this house to represent. All of the bathrooms in Hilltop feature Porcelanosa products, and the entire lower-level floor material is a Porcelanosa light- colored wood that, like porcelain, is easy to maintain—a modern take on wood planking.”
“When this opportunity was presented, our goal was to create a winning partnership between the developer, Tom Wilson of Urban Pacific, our retail account, Atherton Appliance & Kitchens led by Mike Placido, and the brands, Sub-Zero and Wolf. This project illustrates the benefits that come from a shared vision of success with a dedication to service and support shared by all parties.”
