Creek House, A Rustic Retreat Near Tomales Bay, $3MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 25500 State Route 1, Tomales
What: A vintage farmhouse in a spectacular setting, renovated with respect and a light hand (and some really lovely old-growth redwood) by its design-concious owners. The 2-bed, 2-bath house is part of a compound with ivy-covered garages, a casita plus a pair of artists studios and a caretaker’s cottage, all hovering over the meandering Walker Creek and surrounded by protected grazing lands adjacent to Tomales Bay itself. That said, while it may seem remote, it’s an easy half-hour drive west from Petaluma and Route 101 or south to Inverness.
Not surprisingly, its owners are design professionals, business partners in San Francisco’s Hedge Gallery, Roth Martin and well-regarded interior designer Steven Volpe. In a conversation earlier today, Martin pegged the house and site in one word: “Magical”.
Inside, the original brick structure has been augmented by new steel windows and beautiful old-growth redwood.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are a soft, luminous white, with views across the valley.
What We Love: The compound retains its unpretentious, slightly ramshackle quality, not overy finished inside and on the brink of being overgrown on the outside.
