Open House Obsession: Have a Look At Red Dot Studios’ Light Bridge House in Glen Park, $4MAuthor:Philip Ferrato
Where: 537 Laidley Street, Glen Park
When: Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and Tuesday May 23 from 12:30pm-2:00pm
What: Where once stood a small, dilapidated c.1900, Light Bridge House is now an exceptional 4-bed, 3-bath, 2-half bath house by architect Karen Curtiss of Red Dot Studio. Scaled to be a good neighbor architecturally and beautifully detailed with a thoughtful, casual floor plan, it’s a fine example of the kind of high-design infill construction that’s been happening in Glen Park for the past decade. And while it has a garage (with the obligatory EV charger) the location is stellar– a few minutes on foot from the bustling little village of Glen Park, Canyon Market, Gialina Pizza and BART for quick downtown and SFO access.
Light Bridge House? We found two bridges– one at the front entry that passes over a sunken patio on the lowest level, and the skylit bridge that connects the stairwell with the two bedroom ‘wings’.
The stair risers are recycled Douglas Fir timbers, and the kitchen space is defined by a ceiling of wide, re-milled Doulas Fir planks, from trees we’ll never see the likes of again.
The backsplash is custom tile from the legendary Heath Ceramics.
What We Love: In so many renovations, there are just too many choices and temptations. Kudos to the team here for keeping a narrow aesthetic throughout. Clearly, all the choices came from “Column A”. Below, three glimpses of the master suite.
The garden/lower level is dominated by a media/family room that opens to the yard. There’s also a private bedroom and bath on this level, ideal for an au pair suite.
