Author:Philip FerratoWhere: 601 East Avenida Granada, Indian Canyons North/Palm Springs
When: Saturday, April 21, from 12:00pm-3:00pm
Asking: $1,250,000
What: Sean Gaston and Jim Jewell, the team behind Bee Renovated, are selling their wonderfully renovated 4-bed, 6-bath home, built in 1967 by Stan Sackley, an LA businessman who designed and built some of the area’s most stylish homes.
Sackley’s having a “moment” in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, as more and more realtors are citing him in their listings as architectural pedigree; his early work is a kind of self-taught “Proto-Brutaliam”, but all his homes were well-planned for both privacy and entertaining. Sackley’s original rendering for Sean and Jim’s house, below.
Sean and Jim originally bought the house in sound but “fixer” condition, but after they closed escrow, found Sackley’s blueprints rolled up and stashed in a closet. This unexpected discovery gave the project a new clarity, solving the problem of some oddly placed, later partitions (plus lots of pink formica) to restore the original interior proportions. The house is very much walled off from the street, but once inside, the luminous interiors open up to the outdoors and views of the surrounding mountains.
What We Love: With the original plans in hand, Sean and Jim created a pristine interior to serve as a platform for their eclectic style; the atrium is home to a marble nymph the duo hauled home from Liberace’s estate sale.
We’ve covered Sean’s work and Bee Renovated’s serial renovations extensively (see links below) including this house in print a few years back. They’re selling because they’ve snatched up a seriously wonderful ‘70s home not far away.
