Ian Schrager and John Pawson Make Magic Happen in Weho

As Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood moves from seedy to chic and becomes LA’s new nexus for entertainment, one project that’s nearing completion is the EDITION Hotel, a concept created by the legendary hotelier and property developer Ian Schrager and a new luxury brand for Marriott. Schrager brought in the great British minimalist architect John Pawson to work with the design-conscious developer Witkoff on this project– a pair of towers, one of which is topped by twenty super-luxury residences.

Dubbed The Residences at the West Hollywood EDITION, they include this dreamy penthouse, expected to sell at somewhere north of $15M.

Pawson is globally reknowned for his ability to design flawless, serene interiors, and this project is no exception. Ceilings are ten feet high, with walls for art plus wide-open views of DTLA and the Hollywood Hills, plus the amenities include full hotel services and a residents-only roof top pool. Not to worry though, the hotel guests will have their own pool.

Schrager, of course, is the man who invented the concept of the boutique hotel, opening Morgan’s in New York City in 1984 with renovations directed by French designer Andrée Putman. Morgan’s no longer exists, but it was a landmark in hospitality design, one that launched a thousand imitators, in a design aesthetic that can still be seen today in West Elm and CB2 catalogues. It’s not an exaggeration to say he’s transformed the hospitality industry on all levels, with an influence that’s filtered down to our everyday lives.
