Open House Obsession: 1951 Rodney Walker in Studio City, $1.5M
Author:Philip FerratoWhere: 3650 Alta Mesa Drive, Studio City
When: Sunday, June 3 from 2:00-5:00pm
Asking: $1,499,000
What: The Deigh Residence, one of Rodney Walker’s best known projects beyond his three influential Case Study Houses. Built in 1951, this early 3-bed, 2.5-bath split level is a perfect example of Walker’s style– straightforward, well-crafted design that’s both practical and visually pleasing– and shows the influence of his former employer, Rudolf Schindler.
After building a number of similar houses, Walker cut short his career in Los Angeles, going into semi-retirement in Ojai in 1956. Below, an archival image of the living room soon after completion, and its current, almost original, state.
There’s a study/sitting area tucked area behind the living room.
The kitchen is almost entirely original (with new appliances) and connects to the dining area via a pass-though, plus it’s got a view of the valley and direct access to the patio.
The master suite is tucked behind the kitchen, giving it direct access to the patio and views, plus the bath has been entirely remodeled. There are two additional bedrooms and a bath upstairs.
