HabHouse Remakes A Storybook Cottage, $2M
Author:Philip FerratoWhere: 2306 Effie Street, Silver Lake
Asking: $1,998,000
What: The Hanson House, a 3-bed, 3-bath Storybook Style cottage with a 1-bed, 1-bath guest house by French emigre architect Jean-Louis Egasse. Built in 1924, this mini-compound has been recently reworked by Andreas E.G. Larsson, the creative force behind HabHouse, into a completely functional (and still completely romantic) hideaway with great views.
Not much is known about Egasse’s output. He’s enshrined in cinematic history with the Egasse-Braasche House, AKA the Good Will Hunting house, and worked primarily in a picturesque version of the popular Norman Style, bringing his own quirky, spiritual aesthetic to the project with unconventional volumes and angles. Most of the rooms are best described as polygonal, and the man probably never met a nook he didn’t love.
What We Love: So much of Storybook Style is cinematic, fueled by the silent film industry’s static, atmospheric sets, plus the abundance of skilled craftsmen to make all that romance tangible. Egasse’s work is no exception, but we especially love his details– collages of scraps, stones, clinker brick and salvage tile.
