Historic and Exquisite in Montecito, $5.9M

Author:

Where: 280 Middle Road, Montecito
Asking: $5,900,000
What: An architectural pioneer, Lutah Maria Riggs [1896-1984] was one of the first women architects, and one whose work and aesthetic is inescapable today in and around Santa Barbara and Montecito. At first a disciple of the great George Washington Smith, she worked in a similar Andalusian Spanish Revival Style; Clavelitos is the intimate house she built for herself and where she would live out the rest of her life.

For years it’s been the home of LA-based interior designer Richard Hallberg. His love of the place is clear, having restored the interior with respect and simplicity, and reworking the gardens into the exquisite “rooms” we see today. Furnished simply with some of Hallbergs favorite objects, Clavelitos is a luminous retreat from the world.

The great room is 60-feet long with 18-foot ceilings and 2-foot thick walls.
