The Most Glorious Property in Oakville, $22.5M

San Francisco power couple and philanthropists Gary and OJ Shansby have put their incredible Wine Country property on the market.

It’s an extraordinary compound, combining both luxury and simplicity in a trio of vernacular structures– the main house, a pool/guest house, a garage– in grey-washed wood and local stone. Below, walls of glass disappear in the living room, opening it to the surrounding terraces.

The Team: The Shansbys mustered an enviable trio to bring the project to fruition, completed in 2013. Architect Sandy Walker has long been the go-to architect for San Franciscans of means, and is especially noted for his understanding of how his clients live and entertain. The interiors were executed by the late Barbara Colvin of Barbara Colvin & Company, one of a handful of Wine Country design firms with the skill and depth to undertake a project on this scale, and well known for their effortless Wine Country chic. Garden designer Claudia Schmidt created the landscape, a gem incorporating ancient oaks and olive trees, set between neighboring vineyards with protected views of the surrounding mountains

Below, the family room, like the entire the house, has a simple palette of limestone floors, smooth plaster walls and salvaged timber beams. In addition to the open kitchen there’s an adjacent (and equally well-appointed) prep/catering kitchen.

What We Love: While it may set you back $22.5M (and currently, it’s the most expensive property in Napa) this is a peerless Wine Country trophy with an outstanding design pedigree– and one that’s incredibly easy to live in.
