Floral Design: Learn to Arrange Like a ProAuthor:Abigail Stone
While I’m a firm believer that September is way too soon for stores to put up Thanksgiving decorations (I’m looking at you, Pottery Barn), it’s never too early to start honing your skills in the art of entertaining–whether it be in anticipation of the holidays or just a dinner party next week. And mastering a few welcoming wreathes or bouquets for around the home is a good place to start. Even if you’re not throwing the bash, what better gift to give a host than a thoughtfully handmade flower arrangement? Here are a few ways to up your floral design prowess around the state:
The New York School of Flower Design recently underwent a major expansion, opening new branches in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The typical program is pretty intense, with a four-week curriculum covering everything from bridal bouquets to underwater arrangements. Start instead with the three-class intro before going for the big commitment.
At Floral Art (above), located on Venice’s Abbott Kinney Boulevard, owner Jennifer McGarigle teaches floral design classes about once a month. The evening events are complete with creativity-sparking refreshments (i.e. booze), sure to fuel the flower-arranging and friendly conversation. October’s “Bulb Bliss” class sounds like one not to miss. See full schedule here.
San Francisco’s Studio Choo recently announced that they’ll be offering a few small-scale flower-arranging classes at their shop, Prairie Collective. Upcoming tutorials include wreath making and fall and holiday centerpieces to deck your halls in style, but sign up early; classes are limited to around six people.
