2010 Hit List: Dreamland Pillows by Jeanine Hays

Designer Jeanine Hays’ Dreamland pillows were inspired by her various interests, from African-American culture to feminist theory. Hays and her husband, Bryan Mason, digitally manipulate photos to create customized graphics. Mandela and Reflection (shown) are all riffs on a single image of a female face in profile, while Haze features an abstract pattern in the same color that Michelle Obama wore at the inauguration. Hays’ company, AphroChic, is based in San Francisco’s North Beach, the images are printed in Potrero Hill and the goose-down inserts are produced in SoMa. “I like to know that I’m supporting as many local designers and producers as possible,” says Hays.
