Avalon Hotel Makeover Brings Castoffs to the Valley

Sure, Van Nuys, as the capital of Porn Valley, may be better known for its breasts than its Bertoia, but deep in the warehouse district lies a hidden gem – Hotel Surplus Outlet. The hotel liquidator buys furniture and accessories from a variety of hotels in L.A. undergoing renovation, selling to the public everything from armoires to microwaves to mirrors. While the massive warehouse showcases plenty of furniture from mid-tier hotels (and let’s face it, no one wants to live in a Marriott) there is the occasional score. Last year’s redesign of the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills by Kelly Wearstler (who made her name back in 1999 on that same hotel) has meant a huge shipment of classic midcentury furnishings has found its way over to the Outlet. I scored a great Thonet bent plywood chair in almost perfect condition for $120. Is it worth a drive deep into the Valley? The very similar Eames DCW chair starts at $629 on DWR, so you tell me.
