Art Los Angeles Contemporary Art Fair Opens Today

While the rest of the country suffers from debilitating snowstorms and seasonal affective disorder, Angelenos in January suffer from a much different malady: art fair fatigue. With both Photo LA and the Los Angeles Art Show in town earlier this month, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a few art lovers experiencing exhaustion. But it would be a mistake to miss Art Los Angeles Contemporary in Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger. While the Los Angeles Art Show seemed to be much more international in scope (with a special focus on Chinese galleries and artists this year), Art Los Angeles Contemporary promises to provide a fairly all-encompassing look at L.A.’s local art scene. Not surprisingly, Culver City’s galleries are well represented (with paterfamilias Blum & Poe noticeably absent) and so are many of Chinatown’s most prominent galleries, such as the Thomas Solomon Gallery and Human Resources. Also noteworthy, about ten galleries will present a single artist project and there is a full program of performances throughout the weekend. The fair opens with a reception tonight and continues throughout the weekend.
