Best Tropical Getaway for Californians: Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

Founded by Laurance S. Rockefeller in 1965, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel sits along the Big Island’s golden Kohala Coast.  It recently underwent a $150 million renovation, including a revamp of the 258  guestrooms  by John Hara Associates Inc. and Barry Design Associates. The resort also features the newly renovated 18-hole championship Mauna Kea Golf Course, a 2,500-square-foot fitness center and a museum-quality Pacific and Asian art collection, made up of more than 1,600 pieces collected by Mr. Rockefeller and Davis Allen specifically for the Mauna Kea in 1965.

Second and third place went to the Hacienda Beach Club & Residences in Cabo San Lucas and Hotel Renew in Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach (respectively), proving Hawaii is a hot ticket for us Californians.
