voici!: Furniture with a Twist
Author:Lindsey ShookKatrien Van der Schueren, the owner of L.A.-based voila!, calls her furniture gallery an ever-changing cabinet of curiosities. When she announced that she’d teamed up with Jo Laurie (wife of actor Hugh Laurie) to create what’s described as a “slightly demented” furniture line, I had to take a look. The pieces are indeed crazy, as in crazy good.
Take a look at some of the vintage furniture Van der Schueren and Laurie have recreated with style and wit. There’s the CHAIR Chair ($1,800), which came to them as a battered desk seat and has new life with vintage fabric and old typewriter keys hand-sewn onto the arms and back:
Dome Bones ($6,300), a hooded chair dressed in vintage fabric and with a skeleton silk-screened on the front and back, should be put in a room where it can be admired from all sides:
Then there’s the upbeat Sunny Side Up armchair ($3,900) that’s been upholstered with Suzani-style fabric:
Lit-types will love the Wordy accent pillows ($190), cushions covered in denim and silkscreened with quotes from leaders and innovators:
And, if you are dying to get your Mad Hatter on, try the Mad swivel chair ($3,800):
