Mid-Century Architecture That’s Actually Affordable

While there are plenty of great mid-century modern homes for sale in Los Angeles, scoring a rental can be much more difficult. Yet right now a brief stroll through Craigslist shows there are at least two great mid-century properties for rent right now, both in Silver Lake and both priced pretty reasonably.

The first, oddly enough, has architectural pedigree but the listing doesn’t mention the cantilevered duplex was designed by noted California modernist Allyn Morris. Set just down the street from Morris’ own home (also currently on the market for $668,000), the home’s defining features are its multiple balconies, built in furniture, and a killer view of the San Gabriels. There are two bedrooms on the top floor (the master has a HUGE balcony) and the lower level living space has built-in seating. There’s also a wet bar, floor to ceiling windows and another balcony. The two bedroom, one bath is renting for $2300 per month. Sure, it’s not cheap but close to market and better than a lot of other homes in the same price range.

Not far from the Morris duplex is another pedigreed apartment, this time by Rudolf Schindler. While the post seems to celebrate brevity more than the bombast of so many other real estate listings, a little detective work reveals this is likely a unit in the Falk Apartments on Lucile Ave in Silver Lake. The one bedroom apartment features hardwood floors, a built in kitchen nook, and a mud room large enough to be a small office. While the listing doesn’t mention a balcony, the Falk units each have a private exterior space. The cost to live in a Schindler – $1,595 per month.
