Barbie Needs a New Dream HouseAuthor:Marissa Gluck
Anatomically-incorrect Barbie has had a long and varied career –aerobics instructor, sign language teacher, astronaut and jet pilot. But in May, manufacturer Mattel announced her newest gig – architect. With the doll set to hit stores in August, everyone’s favorite fashion plate is looking for a new dream home.
Mattel has partnered with the American Institute of Architects for a competition to find her an ideal home. A just of professional architects has already winnowed 30 entries down to the final five. With online voting open now until Aug 1st, the winner will be announced the next day.
Barbie Shanghai Store by Slade Architects
As the LA Times points out, Barbie has been making strides lately in art circles. Earlier this month, Mattel released the “Museum Collection” of art-centric Barbies inspired by works of Gustav Klimt, Vincent van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci.Additionally, LACMA recently acquired the original Barbie, adding her to the permanent collection in anticipation of its fall exhibition “California Design, 1930-1965: ‘Living in a Modern Way.’
Unfortunately, Mattel won’t be producing the winning house, so we don’t expect to see Babs reclining in some fanciful blobitecture any time soon. We do expect pink, and lots of it, if the store in Shanghai or last year’s Malibu Dream House is any indication.
