Taking Local Literally: CA Coffee TablesAuthor:Marissa Gluck
We’re big fans of local designs, but this series of tables takes the concept to a whole other level. Designed by San Francisco-based J. Rusten Studio in the Mission District, this series of Nakashima-influenced desks and tables has been shaped in the image of our favorite state.
The tables are constructed from Claro walnut wood, a rare lumber that according to the designer, is “reserved for instrument making, gunstocks, or veneer, but we think a showcase piece for your home is the most noble use.” The limited edition pieces are set on a native oak base that’s been stained with vinegar to develop a charcoal-colored patina.
The pieces come in a large desk size, medium desk, a medium and small coffee table. There is also a bar-height version of the large desk that can be custom ordered (please let some local bar order it!).
The limited edition series doesn’t come cheap, with the large desk available for $9,450, the bar height nearly $10,000, the medium desk is $7,350, and the two coffee tables available for $6,450 or $4,950 depending on size. Shipping is free in San Francisco and $100 to anywhere else in CA. The tables take about 10-12 weeks for production and delivery.
