The Scoop: SF’s Ciao Bella Gelateria Gets a Tasty Redesign
Author:Stephanie OrmaGelato enthusiasts be advised: Although the colorful new tiles in SF’s Ciao Bella shop are a dead-on match to their scoop-worthy flavors – the walls are not meant for licking. With a sweet new revamp, you’ll need all the willpower you can muster not to face-plant yourself in this palate-tempting gelateria.
Housed in the Ferry Building since 2003, the recent overhaul for this West Coast flagship was a local effort helmed by Bay Area designer ZMV and San Rafael-based contractor ACI. But thanks to sustainable San Jose outfit Fireclay Tile, the standout feature of this pint-sized space is the gelato bar wall – clad in vibrant, recycled tiles specifically color-matched to the artisan brand’s cold craveables.
And to celebrate its fresh-face and Bay Area history, Ciao Bella will be highlighting flavors that source ingredients from local vendors, such as Pistachio Gelato and Peach Ginger Sorbet. Weekly promos are also planned to spotlight local purveyors, including TCHO Chocolate and Mariposa Bakery. Ready your sweet tooth.
